THE CHALLENGE

Fresh bull on the block

BabyBull’s existing stock journal app needed a complete redesign.

The challenge was to take the original concept and transform it into an engaging, easy-to-use app that catered to the needs of college students learning about stock trading.

We set out to create a platform accessible for new users, while providing intermediate users with a place to hone their skills and emerge with insights and documents useful in their goals.

THE DISCOVERY

Figure it out

The stock market was a new, unfamiliar area, so the first step was to understand how it worked. After gaining an initial understanding of how the market works and what solutions the existing app already provided – the next step was to research what others were doing and how well they were doing it.

Some friendly competition

After reviewing various stock market simulation apps, websites, and trade market journals, we selected five that provided the best insights. For each, we defined the existing functionality and evaluated their strengths and areas for improvement.

At the conclusion we identified key insights for enhancing the app:

  • Comprehensive information on the stock market and specific stocks.
  • A clear, streamlined portfolio display.
  • A watchlist feature to track stocks before purchasing.

Persona-lities

To further expand our understanding, we created three user personas: Investment Newbie, Investment Intermediate, and Investment Curious. These helped us gain a more personal understanding of our users’ needs.

What’s their Story?

For each of our newly crafted personas, we developed detailed user stories and scenarios that explored how they would interact with the app, their motivations, and the challenges they might face. This allowed us to create more targeted solutions that addressed the specific needs of each persona.

THE PROCESS

Leading the bull

Our approach involved several iterations of the app’s core features. The process was highly collaborative, with the clients providing expertise on the stock market, while we focused on shaping the user experience.

Design System

To streamline both the design and development phases, we created a design system, outlining every component of the app. This system not only ensured consistency throughout the user experience but also made it easier for developers to implement the designs and allowed for straightforward updates or additions to the app in the future.

1. Walkthrough

A concise guide intended to familiarize new users with the application.

2. Sign Up

A sign-up process with phone verification – the app will have some sensitive financial information we want to keep private.

3. Profile & Navigation

Short profile and a side menu for the extra features. The navigation between the main sections is at the bottom of the app.

4. Market

Market section for users to follow market trends and make mock purchases of virtual stocks or track representations of their real investments.

5. Watchlist

A watchlist section for users to monitor stocks they are interested in purchasing in the future.

6. Portfolio Journal

Journal section for users to keep track of their current investments, analyze their performance, and make informed decisions.
